Day 1 - Santiago -Viveiro

Santiago de CompostelaSantiago, the goal of pilgrims, is like a jewel in a crown, with the Plaza del Obradoiro, the Platerías, and the Cathedral. Lunch in Santiago. By coach from Santiago to Ferrol, where the train is waiting for us. Welcome and settling in. We will start our train trip by going to Viveiro, a lovely walled city. Visit. Dinner and overnight in Viveiro.

Day 2 - Viveiro - Luarca

LuarcaBreakfast on the train, then a trip to Ribadeo, on the border between Asturias and Galicia, visit and boat trip on the Eo Estuary. Lunch in Ribadeo. From there go to Luarca, the White Village on the Green Coast. Dinner and overnight in Luarca.

Day 3 - Luarca - Gijón

OviedoThe train heads in the direction of the capital of the Principality, Oviedo, in order to sample an incredible range of the most select gastronomy in a city that has a unique collection of Pre-Romanesque monuments. Then on to Gijón, the other important city in Asturias. Lunch in Oviedo. Dinner and overnight in Gijón.

Day 4 - Gijón - Llanes

National Park 'Picos de Europa' On our way to Arriondas, we reach the heart of Asturias: the Picos de Europa National Park, climb up to Lake Enol, the Sanctuary of Covadonga, and finally, Cangas de Onís. After lunch, back on the train and, following the route of the International Descent of the River Sella, we arrive in Ribadesella. From here, to Llanes, a marvellous fishing village in Eastern Asturias. Dinner and overnight in Llanes.

Day 5 - Llanes - Santander

Santillana del Mar During breakfast, the train will arrive in Cabezón de la Sal, from where we will take the coach to visit the New Cave of Altamira and Santillana del Mar. Lunch in Santillana. In the afternoon the train will take us to Santander. Visit and dinner. Later, those who wish to do so can visit the Casino. Overnight in Santander.

Day 6 - Santander - Mercadillo

Santander After breakfast on the train, we will arrive in Bilbao, a modern city where the estuary meets the sea. Visit to the city and the Guggenheim Museum (open in July and August, closed on Mondays the rest of the year). Lunch in Bilbao. In the afternoon we will go to Mercadillo in the Valley of Mena in the north of the province of Burgos. Dinner and overnight in Mercadillo.

Day 7 - Mercadillo - Cistierna

In the morning we will go to Mataporquera, from where the coach will take us to visit the Castile Canal and the Palentine Romanesque art of Villalcázar de Sirga, Carrión de los Condes and Frómista. Lunch in Villalcázar. In the afternoon, we will visit a Roman villa. From Guardo, we will go by train to Cistierna. Dinner and overnight in Cistierna.

Day 8 - Cistierna - León

Leon On our last day, we will cross the pretty rivers and valleys of the mountains of León to the provincial capital, León. Visit to the city, which is full of history, St. Isidro, the Cathedral, Casa de Botines, Old Quarter and St. Mark’s.

Description of Train:

Every suite on El Transcantábrico offers passengers a compartment that is specially designed for rest and privacy. You can sleep in comfort as the train will be parked at a station each night. This means that your sleep will not be disturbed by moving and jolting and also gives those who enjoy nightlife an opportunity to go out and savour the atmosphere of each town.

Each compartment is supplied with a complete selection of travel accessories. The electrical power is 220 volts.

Every suite-compartment has a double bed and some have the option of an independent upper bunk. All are equipped with a luggage rack, minibar, safe deposit box, wardrobe, writing desk and a telephone with an outside line. The private bathroom has a hydro sauna, turbo massage and steam bath, and a hairdryer. The air-conditioning and heating, piped music and lights are all controlled individually.

There is a large picture window in both the suite and the bathroom so that you can enjoy the passing scenery. All the coaches are interconnected so that passengers can move freely along the whole length of the train.
